The Fire Next Time: A Call & Response

“It demands great spiritual resilience not to hate the hater whose foot is on your neck, and an even greater miracle of perception and charity not to teach your child to hate.” – James Baldwin, The Fire Next Time

It is in this spirit that we announce the launch of “The Fire Next Time: A Call and Response”- a year long arts, culture and community engagement initiative launching on 8.25.18, that is part cultural think tank + exhibition + instigation. TFNT: A Call and Response takes its name and inspiration from the life and legacy of James Baldwin and the band of artists, actors, instigators and agitators who worked together to advance freedom, human rights, racial + social justice all over the world.

We are so ever grateful to have the time and resources to dig in & explore this legacy with you, our beloved community. Stay tuned as we share more about the project and how to get involved over the coming weeks.  This work is only made possible by the presence, participation and generosity of the people and funders like the Akonadi Foundation (@akonadi_oakland ).

Happy Birthday James Baldwin. May we forever drink from your wellspring of creative thought, self-determination, righteous indignation, and Black radical imagination.
