Campaigns

Transit justice is an integral part of the work we do, from our Not One More Girl campaign to our transit justice advocacy.

Not One More Girl (NOMG) is a BIPOC youth-led initiative in partnership with community based organizations and Bay Area Rapid Transit Authority (BART) to end gender-based violence.

It is the first community-driven Bay Area initiative to address sexual harassment and gender-based violence on public transportation that includes art, cultural strategy, policy change, and youth leadership. This ongoing initiative was co-created with local Black and Latinx artists and youth and seeks to disrupt the norms perpetuating gender-based violence and bystander inaction on public transportation.

This initiative works outside the traditional structure of police response to ensure riders have access to community options and to reimagine safety, especially for Black and brown gender expansive youth. The NOMG initiative artwork was unveiled in 2021 and 2023, and seen by BART commuters and visitors on select trains and stations.

Our Transit Justice Advocacy has focused on State Bill SB 434 “No Place for Hate”.

It was a pioneering state-wide transit advocacy initiative that Betti Ono advocated for at the municipal and state levels. SB 434 passed on October 7th, 2023, and requires the top ten transit operators in California to collect survey data about harassment as a first step in understanding street harassment and improving rider safety.

Per the new law’s requirements, by the end of 2024, the ten transit agencies will have collected rider experiences with harassment to develop data-driven solutions to increase safety.

A radical safety and violence-prevention vision is required to secure liberation and freedom for BIPOC women, girls, and gender-expansive individuals on public transportation and in their daily lives – Betti Ono will continue to champion new local, state, and national solutions to make this a reality.
